Hiring my nephew taught me a hard lesson about family in the trade

Lots of jewelers say you should always train your kin to keep the business going. I tried that with my nephew, hoping he'd take to stone setting. He just played on his phone and scratched a silver band. My sister got mad when I said he wasn't cut out for it. I now believe forcing family into the shop can hurt more than help.

Been there, done that lol. My cousin lasted a week in my shop before he messed up a simple solder joint. The family drama after I let him go was way worse than the repair bill. Sometimes people just aren't built for this kind of work, family or not. Forcing it can ruin a good thing.

That scratched silver band will cost more to fix than you'd think.

Seriously, what makes fixing a simple scratch so pricey?
