Staring at cereal boxes in the grocery line flipped a switch in my head...

I was in line at the store, bored and looking at the cereal box designs... The way they used bold colors and simple shapes to stand out really stuck with me. It made me think about how much you can say with just a few basic elements... Now I catch myself studying packaging everywhere for layout ideas. Funny how the most ordinary stuff can give you that spark...

That bit about bold colors and simple shapes is so true. My friend Liz is an artist, and she had a full moment in the tea aisle. She was stuck on a project, then saw these mint tea boxes with just a green circle and one leaf. She said the empty space around it made the leaf feel important. She went home and redid a whole painting using that "less stuff, more meaning" idea. Ever have a moment like that, where something simple just clicks?

I used to stuff my paintings with every detail, thinking that meant they were complete. Your friend Liz's take on empty space making the leaf important really shifted that for me. I got stuck on a book cover once, then remembered her tea box story and removed all but the title and a lone bird, which suddenly made it feel whole.
