Hot take: wide mouth jars are way better than narrow for fermenting
I used narrow mouth quart jars for my first three batches of sauerkraut and kept fighting to get the cabbage wedges in and out. Switched to wide mouth half gallon jars last month and I can actually fit my hand in to pack everything down tight. Did anyone else struggle with the narrow ones before giving up on them?

Oh yeah, I had the same exact trouble with narrow ones, packing cabbage down is way easier now with wide mouth.

Wide mouth jars are definitely the way to go for kraut but I wouldn't say narrow ones are totally useless. The half gallon wide mouths are great for big batches but they take up a lot of fridge space and the lids are kind of expensive to replace. I still use narrow pints for smaller ferments like hot sauce or pickled onions where you don't need to reach in. Seems like a lot of people ditch narrow jars completely when wide mouths work just fine for the right job.
