Gifting my own kombucha to a neighbor led to an awkward moment
I gave a bottle of my kombucha to my new neighbor as a welcome gift. She saw the SCOBY floating inside and thought it was spoiled. I had to explain that it's a healthy culture, not mold. She was still unsure, but we ended up having a good talk about fermentation.

Seriously, she got spooked by the SCOBY? That's honestly surprising to me. In my experience, it always looks strange floating in there, but it's just the culture doing its thing. I've given my kombucha to people before and had to say it's not gone bad, it's supposed to look like that. Your mileage may vary, but most folks come around once you explain it's alive and healthy. It's a common mix-up for anyone new to fermented drinks. Good on you for turning it into a chat, though.

My aunt threw out her kimchi thinking it was moldy.
