Almost ruined my espresso machine thanks to a forum post

Some guy named Chris in a coffee discord told me to descale with vinegar... I tried it on my old Gaggia last Saturday and it ate through the grouphead gasket in about 20 minutes. The smell of burnt vinegar filled my whole kitchen and now I have to order a $12 replacement part. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from the CoffeeChris types on this sub?

Wait, are we really blaming the vinegar here instead of the fact you left it sitting for 20 minutes? I mean, you're supposed to run it through and flush it out, not let it soak on the gasket like a science experiment. I've descaled my old rancilio with vinegar five or six times over the last couple years and never had a single issue, but I also don't leave the stuff sitting in there long enough to corrode anything. Chris probably assumed you knew basic descaling timing, not that you'd let it sit like a marinade. Plus a $12 part is a cheap lesson in reading the full instructions instead of just the first sentence.

That "cheap lesson" line hits the nail on the head, and it's the same thing I see everywhere now. People skim the first step of instructions, figure they got the gist, then act surprised when the thing breaks or doesn't work right. It's like nobody reads past the headline anymore, whether it's descaling a machine or setting up a new phone.
