Watched my mom's 20 year old dish sponge go in the trash and the sink smelled better in 3 days
So my mom has this sponge she refuses to toss because 'it still works' and it's been sitting in her sink since I was in high school. I finally swapped it out for a fresh one when she wasn't looking, and by day 3 the whole kitchen smelled way less like a wet basement. I even did a sniff test by the drain before and after, and the difference was wild. She noticed too but won't admit it, she just said 'the soap smells stronger now' lol. Turns out that old sponge was basically a petri dish breeding bacteria and spreading it on every plate. Anyone else have a relative who treats sponges like heirlooms? How do you get them to actually toss the thing?
My grandma had this same sponge situation but with a dish towel that was more hole than fabric. She kept it for wiping counters and it smelled like old milk no matter how many times it got washed. My aunt finally cut it into rags one night and grandma complained for a week that the "good towel" was gone. Some people just form a bond with gross kitchen stuff, I swear.
