My aunt swore vinegar cuts grease better than any soap, but my pans came out sticky after 2 weeks of trying it

She told me to skip the fancy stuff and just use straight white vinegar for everything, but now I've got this weird film on my cast iron and I'm wondering if anyone else got burned by that home remedy or if I just did it wrong somehow?

Oh boy, your aunt definitely played you. Vinegar is for cleaning glass, not for seasoning pans. You basically gave your cast iron a bath in acid and then left it to dry into a tacky mess. That sticky film is the seasoning breaking down and mixing with the vinegar residue. Just scrub it with soap and hot water, dry it completely, then re-season with a thin layer of oil and bake it upside down. Your aunt probably also thinks lemon juice can replace bleach, so take her advice with a grain of salt, or better yet, a block of lard.
