Why I switched from oil analysis kits to basic dipstick checks

I ran a fleet of 12 work trucks and spent $400+ a year on lab analysis kits. Last fall I skipped the kit on a Cummins that was burning a quart every 800 miles, just did the old paper towel drip test. The sheen and smell told me more than any printout did, so now I only use labs for warranty disputes. Anybody else find the basic physical checks beat the fancy gear?
