Torque specs on wet bolts, do I trust the book or my feel? I changed my whole approach after a trailer job in Reno
I used to trust the torque chart cold, no lube math in my head. Then a reefer trailer in Reno came back with eight loose U-bolts after 300 miles. Turns out I was torquing dry threads on greased hardware, so my numbers were garbage. A older guy at the shop clued me in, said to subtract 30 percent when the bolt is wet. Now I write the adjusted number right on the frame rail with a paint pen. But part of me still wonders if the chart is just a starting point anyway. Anybody else run into this, or do you always follow the dry spec?.
