Rant: The time I tried a performance chip on my old Dodge 12 valve instead of just tuning the pump

A buddy of mine convinced me to slap one of those plug and play performance chips on my 1994 Dodge Cummins last spring. I figured it would be a quick way to get some more power without tearing into the injection pump. Man was that a mistake. That chip made the truck run rough as hell, threw false readings to the ECU, and I ended up with smoke pouring out the exhaust on a job site in Louisville. I yanked it out after two days and did a proper pump tweak and injector swap instead. The difference was night and day, the truck pulled clean and strong with no headaches. Has anyone else wasted time on those cheap electronic add ons instead of doing the real mechanical work?
