Old shop foreman said to use plain water for coolant flush, thought he was crazy

He told me to skip the expensive flush chemicals and just run distilled water through a Detroit 60 series for 20 minutes. I tried it on a beat-up 2005 Freightliner last week and the crap that came out was wild - has anyone else had better luck with plain water than the fancy stuff?

Skip the expensive flush chemicals" is exactly right. Had an old timer tell me the same thing. Ran straight distilled water through a Cat 3406 for half an hour. Let it cool, drained it, did it again. Third time came out mostly clear. Then filled with coolant. Saw the same on a Cummins ISX last year. Brown sludge just poured out. Fancy flush stuff can leave residue. Water just dissolves everything. Plus it saves you 40 bucks a bottle. Just don't use tap water or you get mineral deposits. Distilled only or you'll regret it.
