Had to pick between a full rebuild or a used engine for a 6.0 Powerstroke with a cracked head
The truck came in last month with the classic coolant smell and low power. Owner needed it back fast but didn't have a huge budget. I found a used long block with 80k miles for about $4,500, or we could pull the cab and do a full rebuild for nearly double that. We went with the used engine, and the swap took us three solid days. It's running strong now, but I'm keeping a close eye on the oil cooler. Anyone have a good method for testing a used oil cooler before you drop it in?

Buddy of mine had a similar call on a 6.4. He just ran hot water through the oil cooler ports and checked for flow. Said if it's slow or blocked, you know it's junk.

It's funny how the simplest tests often tell you everything you need to know.
