Wiped out a perm because of conditioner buildup

I had this client who kept complaining her perms would barely hold. After 6 months of blaming her hair type, I finally asked what she used at home. Turns out she was piling on a heavy silicone conditioner the night before every perm. That buildup was blocking the solution from penetrating. Now I always do a clarifying shampoo first. Any other stylists encounter a sneaky product habit ruining their chemical services?

Wait is this really that big of a deal though? I mean Ive been doing perms for like 15 years and if buildup was really that bad youd think it would mess with almost every perm out there. Idk maybe its just my experience but even when my clients use heavy conditioners I still get decent results if I just rinse really well before the service.
