Vent: a client's daughter asked why I charge $85 for a cut and I froze up
I had a client in Pasadena bring her 14 year old daughter to the chair on Saturday, and while I was sectioning her hair the kid just looks at me and asks why a haircut costs $85 when Great Clips does it for $22. I laughed it off at the time and said something about training and rent, but honestly it bugged me the rest of the day. The thing is, her mom has been with me for years, and I never had to explain myself to her, so I never built the words for it. I pay $1,400 a month for my chair, plus insurance, plus about $300 every six weeks on color and shears and upkeep, and that is before I even touch anyone's head. What I told her was that she is not paying for the 40 minutes, she is paying for the fact that I know how her hair grows out at the crown and where it flips. But I said it rushed and kind of defensive, and I could tell it did not land. I have been thinking maybe I should just have a short answer ready for that question instead of getting caught off guard. Curious if anyone here has a line they use, because mine needs work.
