Rant: I worshipped sectioning clips for 6 months, then a client's fine hair showed me I was wrong
Everyone in my salon in Boise pushed me to use those little sectioning clips on every foil, and I did it for about 6 months without thinking. Then last week a client named Dana came in with very fine hair, and I clipped her whole head into neat little squares. When I pulled the foils out, the hair around the clip marks was sitting flat and dented, and the color looked patchy right at the root line. Turns out I was clamping too tight and stacking too close, which bent her hair and left me with uneven lift. Another stylist saw my work and simply said, "you are boxing yourself in, just slide them up." I pulled the clips back an inch and used them only to hold the section, and the next foil set came out clean. So no, more clips is not always better, at least not for thin hair. Does anyone here use them mostly for holding sections instead of locking them down?
