Pro tip: a small change in my color mixing process made a huge difference for my clients with gray hair.
For years, I'd mix my color formulas the same way, but I noticed the coverage on resistant gray strands could be patchy. About six months ago, I started adding a tiny bit of a direct dye, like a demi-permanent in a similar shade, to my permanent color formula. I'm talking maybe a quarter of an ounce to a standard mix. The before-and-after on my client Mary was crazy. Her gray coverage went from about 85% to fully saturated and shiny in one process, and the color lasted a full extra week before any noticeable fade at the roots. It seems to help the color grab onto those slicker hairs better. Has anyone else tried blending color types like this for stubborn gray?

My gray coverage was so bad, I almost started a "salt and pepper" trend on purpose.
