My mentor said to skip toner between colors and I regret it

She told me leaving toner out saves time and money, but now my root blends look patchy after 3 weeks. Has anyone else ignored that step and seen bad results?

Ask your mentor if she ever actually lifted your natural color high enough before the root blend.

Ugh, the "saves time and money" line got me. I actually did the opposite once and used toner between every single color layer, and my stylist was annoyed because it took forever. But guess what? My roots still looked great like 6 weeks later. The difference is toner acts like a barrier between layers of color, so skipping it lets them bleed into each other faster. You probably lost the clean separation between your root shade and the ends, which is why it's patchy now.
