Just realized I've been mixing color bowl-side for 6 months, and a client's gray root in Tucson is what tipped me off
I was finishing a root touch up on a regular, and her gray in the back part just wasn't covering the way it used to. I had been slapping developer and color together and stirring it with the tail of my tint brush for about 6 months, maybe 40 clients, thinking I was saving time. She mentioned her old stylist in Tucson always used a whisk, and I brushed it off at first. Next appointment I used an actual whisk for 30 seconds longer and the coverage was night and day, especially on that stubborn 20% gray patch at her crown. I checked my notes and my complaints from clients had gone up since I switched brushes. Anyone else get lazy with mixing and pay for it later without knowing why?
Been there with the brush tail thing for sure, it feels fine until the gray tells on you. A whisk gets everything smooth in like 20 seconds and you stop getting those little pockets of unmixed developer. I keep a tiny one in my kit now and my color comes out way more even.
