I used to hate sectioning my clients' hair before coloring, now I see the light
For years I would just grab chunks of hair and start applying color without any real system. I thought sectioning was just extra work that slowed me down. Then about six months ago a client named Sarah came in with a bad box dye job that left her hair two-tone. I spent three hours trying to fix it and ended up losing money on the appointment because I had to redo so many sections. That night I bought a set of proper clips and watched a few videos from a stylist in Portland. Now I take five minutes to section everything with clean parts and use at least eight clips. My color application takes the same total time but I get way more even results and no patchy spots. Has anyone else had a moment where a basic technique finally clicked for them after resisting it for years?

I have to push back a little here. I sectioned hair for years and honestly it never made a big difference for me, probably spent more time worrying about clips than just working with the hair as it came.

Wait, have you tried not sectioning at all? I used to think sectioning was the only way to get even results but honestly I stopped doing it a couple months ago. I was always fumbling with clips and spending more time dividing up the hair than actually styling it. Now I just grab handfuls as I go and my blowouts actually look better and take less time. Do you find your hair tangles less without all those sections getting in the way?
