Debate: client education on product ingredients - how deep do you go?
I was reading through some cosmetology studies and found a stat that 68% of clients have no clue what sulfates actually do (found it on a Cosmopolitan beauty survey from last year). On one hand, I figure if it works for their hair and they're happy, why bog them down with chemistry talk? On the other, I had a client in Portland last month who was mad I didn't warn her about a protein overload issue that took 3 weeks to fix. How much detail do you guys share with clients about the stuff you use?

Read a blog once saying most clients just want to know if it'll mess up their hair or not.

@parker_patel84 I think that's pretty much right actually... most of my clients just want to know if it'll damage their hair or make their scalp itch. But sometimes you gotta go a tiny bit deeper. A dermatologist on a podcast I heard said most people don't even know what silicone buildup looks like until it's too late. I try to mention the big two things that cause problems for most people like sulfates for dryness and proteins for breakage... but nothing beyond that. Keep it simple unless they ask for more, that's my rule after seeing too many people zone out.
