Can we talk about how everyone ignores the patch test on box color
I have been doing hair for 14 years and I still see stylists skip the patch test, and honestly I used to be one of them. Last month a client came in with a reaction on her scalp from a box dye she used at home, and she told me the box said to test 48 hours ahead but she figured it was just legal cover. I get it, when you are booked solid and a client is in the chair, adding a two day wait feels silly. But I watched this woman's scalp peel for a week, and she had to see a doctor, and all of it came from one shade of dark brown she had used a dozen times. The thing people do not realize is that a reaction can show up on the tenth time you use the same formula, not the first. Your body builds up a sensitivity over repeat use, so the product that was fine in March can light you up in July. I now keep a note in every client file about what they have used and when, and I ask about any itching or flaking even if they brush it off. Has anyone here had a client react to something they had used for years with no issue?
