The one sentence from a stranger that fixed my lawn watering habit

My lawn looked terrible last July in Phoenix, all brown patches no matter how much I watered. I asked a guy at the hardware store and he just said 'You're probably watering too often, not deep enough.' So I switched to once every 4 days with a longer soak, and after 3 weeks the grass was actually green again. Has anyone else had a simple fix like that from a random person that saved you a ton of effort?

Phoenix gets around 7 inches of rain a year, so your grass needs way less water than you'd think. Overwatering shallowly makes the roots lazy and they never go deep enough to find moisture. You want to push water down 6 to 8 inches each time and then let it dry out completely between soaks.

But I've actually had better luck watering more often with less water here in Tucson. My St. Augustine stayed greener through the summer when I gave it a light soak every other day instead of waiting for deep drying cycles. The soil here is so compact and rocky that deep watering just runs off before it can soak in.
