The bus driver who laughed at my route planning
I was mapping out a charity run through Pittsburgh last fall and this old bus driver named Pete leaned over my shoulder at a coffee shop. He said 'you got the hills all wrong, you'll kill the runners by mile 4.' He showed me a quieter street that avoided three steep climbs and added two flat stretches. Has anyone else had a total stranger offer advice that saved a whole project?

That "you got the hills all wrong" line hits hard, because most people just nod politely at unsolicited advice. But Pete was right in a way that goes beyond running routes. I had a similar thing happen with a guy at a hardware store who stopped me from buying the wrong kind of paint for my porch, and it saved me from having to strip it all off in three months. It's weird how strangers sometimes see the flaw in our plans that we've been staring at for days (maybe because they're not emotionally invested in the idea).
