That one neighbor who just waved and said nothing for 6 months

I moved into my place in Phoenix about 8 months ago, and the guy across the street never once said a word to me. Just a little nod or a wave if we happened to be outside at the same time. Then last week, my car battery died at like 7am before my shift. He came out of nowhere with jumper cables and had me going in 10 minutes. Before he walked off, he said "figured you'd need help eventually, just took you long enough." It was funny because he totally noticed me this whole time. Makes me think I should be better about reaching out to new people in my own neighborhood. Has anyone else had a quiet neighbor turn out to be really helpful when something went wrong?
