PSA: My whole neighborhood meeting about a new stop sign turned into a shouting match

We were trying to decide where to put it on Maple Street, but one guy brought a 3 foot long poster of traffic studies from 2012. Someone else yelled 'my kids can't play safe' and now the city says they might just drop the whole idea. What's the best way to get a calm vote on something like this?

Oh man, neighborhood meetings are a special kind of chaos. My own attempt to organize a block party ended with a debate on proper hot dog condiment placement, so maybe don't take my advice. In my experience, asking the city clerk to run a secret ballot vote by mail can cut out the drama. People seem to get less heated when they're not face to face.

That secret ballot idea from @nancy_adams is pretty smart for cutting down on yelling matches. Thing is, mail-in votes can also make people feel left out of the talk, like their neighbor's real concerns just get reduced to a checkmark. It might stop a fight over hot dogs, but it could also build up quiet resentment if folks don't feel heard before the vote. Maybe the trick is doing both, having a simple meeting just to listen first, then the private vote after. Lets people feel like they were part of the process without the public pressure.
