I finally changed my mind about using a dehumidifier in my basement

For years I thought they were a scam and just wasted electricity. But after 3 months of musty smell and seeing actual mold start on a box of old books down there, I borrowed a friend's unit. Within 2 weeks the air felt drier and the smell was gone. Has anyone else had a similar turnaround on something you were stubborn about?

Whoa hold on, I gotta respectfully disagree with you here. I still think dehumidifiers are mostly a waste for most people if you don't have a serious moisture problem. You had mold starting and a musty smell for months, that's a different situation than someone just wanting slightly less humid air. In a normal basement with just a little dampness, running one of those things 24/7 really does run up your electric bill for not much payoff. I'd say you were right to be stubborn if your basement wasn't actually growing mold like yours was.

Oh man, my friend Jenna had this exact debate with her husband over their basement. She finally caved and bought one after he complained about it feeling clammy down there. The electric bill went up like $15 but then she realized the dehumidifier was actually pulling like a gallon of water out every day, so it was way more damp than they thought.
