A guy at the rec center in Boise said I should stop fixing my neighbor's fence for free, and I think he's right about boundaries
Last month I helped my next door neighbor patch his back fence, and then he asked me to help stain his deck the next weekend, and then it turned into moving his treadmill. A guy named Marcus at the Boise rec center overheard me complaining and said, "You teach people what your time costs, and right now you're teaching them it's zero." That hit me hard because I've been the free handyman on my block for 3 months now and I never once asked for gas money or even a thank you. Where do you all draw the line between being a good neighbor and running a free side business?
