Question about how I used to gatekeep my own hobby

For years, I'd get genuinely annoyed when someone at a con or shop would talk about a character but only know them from the movies. I'd give them this look like they weren't real fans. The tipping point was at a small con in Omaha last year, this teenager was super excited about Moon Knight, but only from the show. I started my usual 'well, in the comics...' spiel and just saw his face totally shut down. He just walked away. It hit me right then that I was being a jerk and probably turning people off from the whole thing. I was so focused on proving my own knowledge that I forgot we're all just here because we like these stories. Has anyone else had to unlearn that kind of attitude?

My own wake-up call was with Star Wars books. I used to quiz people on Legends lore at my local library's comic club. I stopped when a mom bringing her kid said she felt too nervous to join in. Now I just ask "what's your favorite part of the story?" and go from there.
