My comic shop guy pulled the one trick that got me back into single issues, but I'm not sure it proves anything
I quit buying floppies about four years ago because I kept ending up with short boxes full of stuff I read once and never touched again. Last month the owner of my local shop in Sacramento handed me a beat up copy of a Saga issue and said "just read this one on the bus home, don't buy anything." That one issue hooked me harder than any trade paperback ever has, and now I'm back to a pull list. But here's what I can't settle: is that just good salesmanship that would work on anybody, or are single issues really a better way to try a book? Curious if the shop owners here think the free single is a legit trick or just a way to get me spending again.
Isn't the fact that it was free the actual reason it worked on you, not the format? If he'd handed you a free trade of volume one, you probably would've had the same reaction, and you'd still be out the cash for the floppies either way. The single issue just made it easy for him to give you a sample without eating the cost of a whole book.
