Heard a kid at my shop say Wolverine's healing is a cop-out, and it made me rethink 20 years of reading
I was at my local shop in Fresno last Saturday for the dollar bin sale and these two teenagers were arguing about Wolverine. One kid said his healing factor makes every fight boring because nothing ever sticks. I almost jumped in to defend him but then I just stood there holding a beat up copy of Uncanny X-Men 133 and thought about it. The kid had a point in a way I never let myself see. When I was 14 saving up 3 bucks a week for new issues, the healing was the whole appeal, the idea that you could take a beating and keep going. But now at 38 I get why a young reader finds it flat, because there are no stakes you can hold onto. I ended up buying that comic anyway for 4 dollars and reading it on my porch that night. What got you into a character back then that does not work for you now?
