Had a guy at the Portland Comic Con tell me my variant covers were worthless
I was at the Portland Comic Con last Saturday, standing in line for a signature, and some random guy behind me saw my stack of variant covers. He laughed and said "those are just filler, not real collectors items." It really got under my skin at first, but then I started talking to other folks in line and realized most people just collect what they love. I ended up trading a couple of my variants for some old issues I actually wanted to read. Has anyone else had a collector tell you your stuff is no good?

That guy had a point though. Variant covers are just cash grabs from publishers. They print thousands of them now so the "rare" ones are everywhere. Real collectors want first prints and key issues, not five different covers of the same book. You traded them for stuff you wanted to read that says everything right there.

A buddy of mine, Mike, he got sucked into the variant cover craze a few years back. Bought a ton of the "store exclusive" ones, kept them in bags and boards, thought he was building a retirement fund. Then the market flooded and he realized every shop had like twenty different covers for the same issue. He ended up selling them all at a loss to a guy who was just using them for decoupage art projects. Now he just grabs the regular cover and actually reads the book. Felt kinda bad for him but it proved the point better than any argument could.
