A guy at the laundromat said he reads comics by character, not by writer, and it made me rethink my whole shelf
So I was folding clothes at the laundromat on 9th Street a few days ago and this older guy next to me saw the Batman logo on my hoodie. We got to talking and he tells me he has been collecting since 1987, which is way longer than me. I ask him who his favorite writer is, thinking that is the normal question, and he says he does not care about writers at all. He picks runs based on the character staying the same guy through different hands, like he wants to see how three or four writers all handle Bruce Wayne's stubborn streak. I always chased names on the cover, so this flipped my whole way of buying. I went home and pulled out my stack and noticed I skip runs just because a certain writer left, even when the art and voice still worked. Now I am wondering how many good books I passed on because I was loyal to a name instead of a character. Does anyone else sort their collection by character first, or am I late to something obvious here?
