Why does nobody talk about preheating the mug before pouring
I was at my buddy's place in Sacramento last weekend and he poured me a cup straight into a cold ceramic mug, and the coffee went lukewarm in about 4 minutes. I started filling my mug with hot tap water while the kettle boils, and now my coffee stays hot for almost 20 minutes instead. Does anyone else do this, or am I just being extra about it?
The hot tap water trick is smart and I do the same thing, but I want to know what kind of mug you're using. A thick ceramic mug holds heat way better than a thin one, and a lot of people don't realize the mug itself is stealing heat from the coffee until they're both the same temp. Have you tried comparing a thick diner style mug against a plain thin one side by side? Also, how hot is your hot tap water actually getting? Mine only comes out around 120 degrees, which helps but isn't the same as a full preheat with boiling water. If you really want to test your theory, pour boiling water in, let it sit a minute, dump it, then pour your coffee and time it against a cold mug. I bet the gap is even bigger than 20 minutes.
