This was last Saturday at a cafe in Portland. I was waiting for my pour-over and this guy in his 40s walks in, asks to see their green coffee inventory. The barista brings out three bags from different farms in Ethiopia. This guy spends a full quarter hour just sticking his nose in each bag, making notes on his phone, then walks out without buying anything. I get that smell matters but isn't the whole point to actually taste the roasted version? Has anyone else run into these people who treat coffee like wine at a tasting event but never actually drink it?

I kept a list for the last 2 years of every single coffee roaster I've bought beans from. Hit 100 last week and honestly I'm a little surprised. Most people in this community swear by sticking to one or two roasters and really dialing in their technique. But I think that misses the point a bit. Every roaster has a different take on the same beans, and I've learned more from trying 100 roasters than I ever did from making 50 perfect cups from one place. The Ethiopian beans from Roaster #23 tasted totally different than the ones from Roaster #76, even though they both claimed the same region. Has anyone else found that hopping around actually made you a better home brewer?

Since light roast beans are denser, you actually use more beans by weight for a scoop, so you can get slightly more caffeine. I'd believed the opposite for years.
