TIL my neighbor's pour over routine had a simple fix

I was bragging about my new espresso machine to my neighbor Bill last weekend and he just nodded and showed me his 20 year old plastic Melitta cone. He said "I get the same cup every single time without thinking about it for five minutes." It made me wonder if I've been overcomplicating my morning routine for no real gain. Has anyone else had a moment where someone with less gear made you rethink your whole setup?

Wait is this really something worth rethinking your whole life over? Pour over vs espresso is like comparing a bicycle to a motorcycle. Sure they both get you there but theyre totally different experiences. Ive had people try to tell me their instant coffee is just as good and I just smile and nod. The real question is do you actually enjoy the extra time and effort with your machine or are you just doing it because you think you have to?

My Gaggia Classic sat untouched for three months until I finally admitted I was just making espresso to justify the $400 I spent on it. When I switched back to a $30 plastic pour over cone, I actually started looking forward to making coffee again instead of dreading the warm up time and cleanup. The whole "you have to do it the hard way to be a real coffee person" thing just makes people feel bad for no reason. So yeah, are you actually getting joy out of your routine or just performing a role you think you should be playing?
