The switch from pour over drip to French press 3 years ago messed with my morning routine harder than I expected

I used to rely on my $20 Melitta cone every single day, timing the bloom exactly 30 seconds on the dot, but after I snapped the ceramic base last spring I grabbed a Bodum French press on impulse. Now the grind is way coarser, the brew time is 4 minutes with no fancy workflow, and I feel like I lost some control over the cup but gained a deeper flavor. Anyone else ditch their precise method for something simpler and regret it or love it?

Honestly just play around with your steep time a bit. I do 4 minutes for the first cup on weekdays but on weekends I let it go 6 minutes and the flavor gets even richer without going bitter. Also try pouring it through a paper filter after you press to catch the fines, that gives you back some of that clean feel you had with the Melitta while keeping the body from the French press. The grind adjustment is annoying at first but once you find that sweet spot for the coarse level it becomes muscle memory pretty quick.

Did you find the deeper flavor worth losing that precise control you had?
