Saw a barista rinse filter papers at a shop in Portland and it changed my brew

Watched a guy at Heart Coffee run hot water through a V60 paper before grinding beans. Tried it at home and my cups stopped tasting like cardboard. Has anyone else noticed a difference with pre-rinsing?

Totally agree with this. Felt like I was drinking wet newspaper before I started rinsing my filters and now the flavors are way more clear and crisp.

Yeah, the "wet newspaper" thing really hit home. I always thought people were just being picky about their coffee, you know? Like, it's just water through grounds, how different can it be? But I finally tried rinsing my filters last week and man, I was wrong. That papery taste was definitely there and now my morning cup actually tastes like the beans instead of the filter. Makes me wonder what else I've been stubborn about for no reason.
