Overheard a guy at the shop say he still uses a blade grinder for pourover

I was at a coffee expo in Portland last month and this older guy was telling his friend he uses a $30 blade grinder for his V60. He said he just shakes it while grinding and gets a decent cup. It got me thinking about how much money I've spent on gear when maybe the real trick is just technique and not being a snob about it. Has anyone else tried going back to basics like that and found it worked okay?

oh man, i spent like $400 on a hand grinder that i'm scared to drop because i'd probably cry for a week. meanwhile this guy's out here shaking a $30 spice grinder like a maraca and getting good cups. makes me wonder if my fancy gear is just compensating for my shaky pouring technique.
