My neighbor's 1992 espresso machine finally died, I watched the whole tear down

Last Saturday he pulled the boiler apart in his garage and found scale so thick it looked like a limestone cave. He soaked the parts in citric acid overnight and it's running again, but I've never seen someone so happy about descaling. Anyone else ever revive a machine that old, or is he just stubborn?
