Can we talk about pre-wetting your coffee filter with hot water

I always skipped that step because I thought it was just for warming the mug, but after a barista in Portland explained it rinses off papery taste I tried it and my morning cup actually tastes cleaner now, anyone else notice that difference or is it just in my head?

Exactly. It's one of those small steps that actually changes things. I notice the same thing with preheating a cast iron pan. Skip it and the food sticks. Do it and everything releases clean. Same idea with rinsing the filter - a tiny bit of preparation makes a huge difference in the final result.

My buddy Tom tried rinsing his coffee filter after I told him about it. He called me later all excited that his morning cup didn't have that weird paper taste anymore. Pretty funny how something so simple made him act like he discovered fire or something.
