Was always the guy booking hostels 3 months ahead, but after a flight cancellation in Denver last week I just walked into a random motel and saved $40 a night compared to my original plan.

What convinced me was the front desk guy telling me they drop rates after 8 PM for empty rooms, has anyone else tried same day booking and actually saved money?

Maybe it's just me but I've found last minute always beats planning ahead.

Yeah I saw some travel blog talking about this exact thing, they said hotels would rather fill a room for cheap than have it sit empty. Makes total sense honestly, running a hotel costs the same whether people are there or not. Heard one guy say he got a Hilton room for like 60 bucks once by walking in at 10pm. I've never been brave enough to try it myself but your story is making me rethink my whole trip planning game for sure.
