Tried booking a hostel vs a budget hotel across four cities

I spent two months bouncing around Portugal and Spain. Picked hostels in Lisbon and Barcelona, budget hotels in Porto and Seville. The hostels cost about 20 euros a night but I had to buy earplugs every three days and lost a pair of shoes in Lisbon. The budget hotels ran 45 euros a night but included breakfast and I could actually sleep through the night. Has anyone else found that paying a bit more for a private room is worth the sanity?

Buddy of mine woke up in a Madrid hostel to find someone had swapped his beat-up sneakers for a pair of flip-flops way too small for him. He had to walk to the nearest Decathlon in those things.

Lost a pair of shoes? Like somebody straight up stole them while you were sleeping or they just vanished into thin air? That's wild.
