Still think travel insurance is a scam? Here's why I changed my mind

I was in Bangkok last June and got hit with a nasty case of food poisoning. Ended up in a clinic for two days and had to cancel a flight to Chiang Mai. The insurance I bought for $35 covered the clinic bill and the flight change fee, which came to $180 total. I used to skip it every time, but that trip taught me the hard way it's worth the $35. Has anyone else had a claim that actually paid off?

Did you see that article on Reddit last week where a guy had his bag stolen in Barcelona and insurance covered the whole thing? That plus stories like yours make me think it's worth the small cost even if most trips go smoothly. I throw $40 at it before every international trip now and just hope I never need to use it.
