Stayed at a hostel in Portland that forced me to cook all my meals

I booked this super cheap hostel in Portland last month thinking I'd eat out, but the kitchen was tiny and I had to prep every meal in a microwave. That experience made me wonder if investing in a portable stove is smarter than relying on hostel kitchens for saving money on food. Anyone else run into this and choose a side like cooking gear vs eating local on the cheap?

Tbh a microwave-only kitchen in Portland feels like a crime against that city's food scene. I'd rather spend the $30 on a cheap camp stove than eat another microwaved burrito in a shared hostel room. Just watch out for the fire alarms, learned that the hard way in Seattle.

Actually, the "crime against that city's food scene" part made me realize I've been way too defensive about hostel microwaves, you're totally right.
