My go-to budget hostel in Bangkok raised their prices by 8 dollars a night overnight
I showed up last week ready to book my usual 3 night stay at the Niras Bankok Hostel and the clerk told me it's now 18 bucks a night instead of 10, so I walked 2 blocks over to a place with dorm beds for 12 bucks and actually got free breakfast included, has anyone else noticed their hidden gem hostels suddenly hiking rates without warning?

omg yeah i literally just heard from my cousin who works at a hostel in chiang mai that a lot of places are doing this since electricity prices shot up like 30% in thailand last month. @martinez.karen totally called it with the utility thing, and i read somewhere that bangkok property taxes doubled for short term rentals so the owners are just passing it on to us. ugh it sucks but the new spot with free breakfast sounds like a win honestly, those 4 dollar rice and egg plates add up fast when youre staying a week.

I just read an article about how hostel prices across Southeast Asia are going up because of higher utility costs and property tax increases, so it's probably not just your spot in Bangkok. That free breakfast at the 12 dollar place sounds like a nice trade off, especially since breakfast in Bangkok can easily run you 3-4 bucks anyway. I'd rather pay a bit more and get food included than gamble on another sudden price jump at the old place.
