Met a guy in Lisbon who said hostels are a total scam now
He was checking into a private room at a hostel for 90 euros a night, arguing it was still a 'budget' choice because of the free breakfast and social vibe. I told him my friend and I split a small apartment for 65 euros total, cooked our own meals, and had way more space and quiet. When did hostels stop being about saving real money?

That apartment split sounds like the move. Found the same thing last summer, got a whole place for less than a dorm bed in some spots.
