Hit my 12th hostel stay before I realized the top bunk lockers are a scam

I packed a cheap cable lock for my duffle for two years, thinking it secured the locker cubby in hostels. Then in Lisbon, a guy reached over the top and grabbed my phone through the gap while I was mid nap. Checked the locker door, it wasn't even closed properly, the latch was decorative. Has anyone else skipped the luggage storage room and just used those free lockers at the train station instead?
