Had to pick between a hostel in Barcelona and a campsite 30 minutes outside the city
I went with the campsite for 12 euros a night and used the saved cash on metro passes, but the walk from the metro stop to the tent in the dark was sketchy - anyone else rough it for savings and regret the commute?

... and honestly, how much did you really save after factoring in the metro passes and the anxiety of walking back in the dark? Like, was that 12 euros a night worth feeling like you might get jumped just to get to your tent? I get wanting to stretch a budget but sometimes the hidden costs aren't just money, they're your peace of mind. Did you even sleep okay after that walk or were you just laying there listening for footsteps?

Actually this reminds me of a time I stayed at this place in Lisbon that was basically a converted storage closet near the train station. Cost like 15 euros a night but I had to share a bunk with a guy who snored like a lawnmower and the window was painted shut. The metro was fine but the walk from the station had these flickering streetlights and a pack of stray dogs that followed me every time. I kept telling myself it was an adventure, but really I was just waiting for the sun to come up so I could leave without the dogs. @grant.parker you hit it with the anxiety tax, that stuff adds up way faster than any euro you think you're saving.
