Had to pick between a hostel in Barcelona and a campsite 30 minutes outside the city

I went with the campsite for 12 euros a night and used the saved cash on metro passes, but the walk from the metro stop to the tent in the dark was sketchy - anyone else rough it for savings and regret the commute?

I get wanting to stretch a budget but sometimes the hidden costs aren't just money, they're your peace of mind. Actually this reminds me of a time I stayed at this place in Lisbon that was basically a converted storage closet near the train station. Cost like 15 euros a night but I had to share a bunk with a guy who snored like a lawnmower and the window was painted shut. The metro was fine but the walk from the station had these flickering streetlights and a pack of stray dogs that followed me every time. I kept telling myself it was an adventure, but really I was just waiting for the sun to come up so I could leave without the dogs. @grant.parker you hit it with the anxiety tax, that stuff adds up way faster than any euro you think you're saving.
