Got stuck in Budapest when my bus ticket turned out to be for the wrong week

I was at the Budapest bus station, ready to head to Vienna. I showed my printed ticket and the driver just shook his head and pointed at the date. I had booked it for the next week by mistake. The next bus was full and a new ticket right then would have cost me 60 euros. I was panicking. I went inside the station and asked at the info desk if there was any other way. The woman told me to check the train schedule on a board in the corner. I found a slower regional train leaving in an hour for only 25 euros. It took two extra hours with a couple stops, but I got there. Has anyone else fixed a big ticket mess-up without spending a lot more money?

That was smart to check the train board. I've found station staff often know about those slower, cheaper regional routes that don't show up on the main booking sites. It's always worth asking, even if you feel rushed.

Wait, so the real travel hack is just... talking to a person? What year is this, are we going to ask for directions next instead of using maps?
