A hostel worker in Paris gave me a talking to about my packing method

Last year in Paris I stayed at a hostel near Gare du Nord and the guy at the front desk saw me struggling with my big suitcase. He told me I was wasting space and money by not using compression cubes for my clothes. I switched to two medium cubes and a small backpack, and now I save about 30 euros per trip on baggage fees. Has anyone else gotten good advice from hostel staff that changed how you pack?

Wait, 30 euros saved per trip? That's wild. I mean, I knew compression cubes save space but I never actually did the math on the cost difference. That hostel worker basically saved you a full meal in Paris with that advice. I've been rolling my clothes for years and it helped a bit, but maybe I need to finally buy a set of those cubes too.

Rolling works fine but the cubes really let you cram things in without making a mess. Did you actually weigh your bag before and after switching to cubes to see if you saved any weight from not overpacking?
